A Talk from Phil Tidy

Phil Tidy has produced 100s of music videos and commercials worldwide, for huge names such as the SugaBabes and the Spice Girls. He owns his own production company named Squire Studios where his work is situated. When we met Phil he said music videos are all about pushing the boundaries of film-making. A music video can be as abstract as your imagination can take it, and so it is a great testing ground for showing off skills as a new film-maker, whilst exploring new technologies.

Here were his tips on what music videos are all about:

What is a Music Video?

- Music videos are, in essence, adverts for a band
- They promote the band, their style, and their ideology

How do you Make One?

- Budgeting - Put the money where you can see it! Don't waste money on small, unnoticeable features
- Feed the cast! Actors get restless and tired very quickly
- Think of the little things, make everything run as smooth as possible
- Find a team of people than can work with you well and quickly

Following this quick session he showed us some of his own work, an example below being his production of Everything Everything's music video for their song 'Handsome'
